He was the happy warrior we’d asked him to be, with a strong clear message untainted by grievance — even as he expressed his disappointment with last week’s Supreme Court ruling on tariffs and drew clear distinctions between his program and the opposition’s.
He deftly drew out the lunacy of Democrats’ positions on illegal immigration, crime and trans issues —time and again flagging their obsession with peculiar “rights” at the expense of common sense.
How stark the line, a clear choice for voters in the midterms, when he declared that our government’s first duty is to protect US citizens, not illegal immigrants — and Democrats sat silent as Republicans cheered.
“These people are crazy,” he rightly declared as he pointed to the left side of the chamber.
He innovated a whole new kind of State of the Union drama, not just recognizing his guests but having many enter on cue, awarding medals and other signal honors as appropriate and leading the room in both applause and profound sympathy.
Even in a record-long speech, he couldn’t cover everything he and his team are doing for the country nor all the reasons to expect a brighter future this year and in the long term.
Yet he gave listeners good cause to believe that the state of the Union is indeed strong — and solid reason to know which party deserves the credit.
I have to question why all Democrats sat when asked to stand if protecting Americans is their first call to duty?
Aren’t we all on the same team, and don’t we have a legal pathway for non-citizens to apply for citizenship? Democrats are a disgrace to the electorate they represent.

Operations began in 1934 and intensified sharply after 1945. Most immigrants arrived by sea. About 7,000 crossed land borders, largely from the north, and a small number arrived by air. From August 1945 to May 1948 alone, sixty-five voyages carried more than 70,000 immigrants, the majority Holocaust survivors.
Britain responded with force. In September 1945, the Royal Navy created the Palestine Patrol, deploying destroyers, cruisers, aircraft, radar, and intelligence units to intercept incoming ships. By 1946, the blockade was highly effective. Twenty-two vessels were captured that year. Only one broke through. Thousands of immigrants were detained at Atlit and later released under the monthly certificate quota of 1,500. In August 1946, British policy hardened further. Intercepted immigrants were deported to detention camps in Cyprus rather than held in Palestine.
Between 1946 and 1948, more than 52,000 Jews were interned in Cyprus. Others, including the passengers of the Exodus in 1947, were deported to camps in the Hamburg area of Germany after Britain briefly adopted a policy of returning immigrants to their ports of departure. In 1947 alone, twenty-five voyages carried roughly 41,000 immigrants. Almost all were intercepted. Only three ships broke the blockade.
Numerically, Ha’apala did not overwhelm British quotas. Most arrivals were and detained. The naval blockade worked.
And yet the voyages continued.
They continued because hundreds of thousands of displaced persons in Europe demanded a way out. They continued because the White Paper remained in force despite President Truman’s call to admit 100,000 survivors, and because each intercepted ship generated international scrutiny of British policy in the final years of the Mandate.
The ships themselves varied widely. Some were small vessels carrying youth movement members. Others were large refitted ships, including ten purchased in the United States, crewed in part by roughly 200 North American volunteers. The Palmach issued standing orders for resistance during boarding attempts. Sabotage targeted British deportation vessels operating between Haifa and Cyprus.
By the time the Mandate ended in May 1948, more than 56,500 postwar immigrants had been deported from Palestine, most to Cyprus. From January 1948 until independence, eight additional ships attempted to arrive. All of them were seized.
Ha’apala didn’t change British policy by breaking the blockade. It changed the political landscape by refusing to accept it. It bound the fate of Holocaust survivors to the question of sovereignty in full view of the international community.
Nearly 120,000 immigrants over fourteen years arrived to their ancestral homeland through this framework. Most came by sea and faced arrest. The term means ascent. The reality was enforcement, detention, and persistence until the Mandate ended.

ReplyDeleteThis isn’t about agreeing with the President. I’m not even going to talk about him. This is about how elected officials conduct themselves in the House chamber. There was a time when members of Congress could oppose an administration forcefully while still respecting the office and the moment. That line used to matter. It didn’t seem to matter last night.
When victims of violent crimes were recognized, including a young girl who survived something horrific, it didn’t appear that a single Democrat stood. The chamber split along party lines during a moment that should’ve transcended politics. Refusing to stand wasn’t a policy stance. It was a very unflattering statement.
Profanity displayed on clothing inside Congress (Talib) and broadcast nationwide was another choice. The House floor isn’t a protest rally or a campaign stage. It’s a formal seat of government. That space deserves seriousness. Watching it treated like a backdrop for defiance was embarrassingly disgusting.
Then there’s the keffiyeh. It being worn on the House floor (or anywhere within the US government) carried its own message. Symbols aren’t neutral. When a member of Congress chooses to wear a symbol widely associated with anti-Israel agitation while declining to stand for American victims, it raises legitimate questions and how it’s not being investigated is mind blowing. Jews are frequently pressed to prove loyalty, asked whether their allegiance lies here or elsewhere. Yet when an elected official signals solidarity with a foreign cause inside Congress, scrutiny disappears. The double standard is…despicable.
Public office requires clear allegiance to the United States. That expectation shouldn’t be controversial. When figures like Ilhan Omar, who was born abroad and regularly denounces the country she serves, sit in Congress, it’s reasonable for people to question priorities and loyalty. Representation carries responsibility.
Meanwhile, structural corruption continues to erode trust. Members of Congress arrive with modest wealth and leave with fortunes. Insider trading laws technically apply to lawmakers, but enforcement has been weak and loopholes remain. President Trump has proposed banning congressional stock trading outright, and that proposal has made one thing clear…if public service truly belongs to the public, members of Congress shouldn’t be trading individual stocks at all. The resistance to that idea says a lot.
What stood out most last night was the contrast in tone. On one side of the chamber there was visible appreciation for the country and for the people being honored. On the other, the posturing felt theatrical. It didn’t look like leadership. It looked like resentment. 
For years now, I’ve watched what feels like the steady disintegration of the Democratic Party. This isn’t the party I once aligned myself with. It isn’t the party I defended or supported. There is no longer a center. Whatever this is, it’s louder, angrier, and confuses disruption with strength.
The disappointment is real. I expected better. I believed in better. What I saw last night didn’t reflect the seriousness, respect, or integrity that once defined the party I supported.
