Heartfelt Anguish

We are all worried for our safety. We are all on edge and being very careful.” said Dallas Polce Chief David Brown at a Monday press conference following the deadly shooting that took the lives of 5 Dallas Police officers Thursday night.
Saying he was “running on fumes,” Brown spoke frankly about everything that his employees have to deal with on a daily basis – and that it can be overwhelming at times.

Saying he was “running on fumes,” Brown spoke frankly about everything that his employees have to deal with on a daily basis – and that it can be overwhelming at times.
We’re asking cops to do too much in this country” said Brown.
“Every societal failure, we put it off on the cops to solve” said Brown. He listed mental health, drug addiction, loose dogs, failing schools as problems the public expects ‘cops to solve.’

When asked what advice he would give black men, Chief Brown said, “Become a part of the solution, serve your community. Don’t be a part of the problem…we’re hiring. Get off that protest line and put an application in. We’ll put you in your neighborhood – we will help you resolve some of the problems you are protesting about.”

  2. My readers are sending letters to Chief Brown...thanking him for the great example he is....nobody ever gives a damn what cops go through every single minute of every single day.
Lots of work to do on law enforcement problems; I hope Chief Brown has a hand in helping with that across the nation.

    1. Sounds like a good idea, Jersey, but when the problems are not rooted in a lack of funding so much as they are in a wayward, adamantly self-destructive, amoral, stupidly rebellious mentality, it will take a lot more than government dumping tons of dough into blighted communities to bring about the renascence you –– and I – hope for.

Many years ago I taught for the United Negro College Fund, and later on at the New York Institute forth Education of the Blind, where I had in my classes a large percentage of black and hispanic students all of them from the worst neighborhoods in in all five boroughs of the City.

I believe I told you this before, but quite a while ago. In those far away days –– the early 1960's through the mid '70's –– I found most of the college students completely unprepared for college-level work. The public secondary schools had made a tragic farce out of what-was -upposed-to-be their education.

From a realistic perspective we were doing third-grave level work in a college were most of the kids were working toward a degree in education.

That was the bad part. The good part came with my discovery that despite their lack of academic preparation, most of the students were kind and very friendly. Most really tried to cooperate with me. It was touching, but ultimately frustrating, because instead of teaching them A Basic History of Western Civilization, I found myself
f teaching Remedial English most of the time.

I had better luck with the music end of things. Many were talented singers with naturally good voices, so we ere able to perform a wide selection of choral literature with real success, but I had to teach all of it by rote.

At the School for the Blind I had much better luck, because the students boarded with us all week, and only went home on weekends. I put in many twelve and fourteen hour days with no extra pay for "overtime," because I worked with my kids in supervised evening study halls, as well as in the classroom and music studio. I also made it my business to visit with some of the parents in their homes in the South Bronx, Harlem, Queens, and Bedford Stuyvesant. Most were very cordial, and I think some honest good came out of those contacts. I was proud to have been able to persuade several sets of parents to get involved directly with the school –– something no one had ever tried to do before.

Though the college teaching was a flop, the years at the Blind School reman a pleasant memory.

HOWEVER, I doubt very much if I could duplicate the success i had 45-50 years ago today, because the ghetto culture, which was always poor, but still basically decent, has degenerated horribly, coarsened alarmingly and become so rotten with poisonous influences I'd be afraid to go into those neighborhoods anymore.

    2. So true FT. We have had such a demorilization of our inner cities with lack of 2 parent homes up to 70%.
Poorer countries with less funds have societies who value education . It's a messaging problem,
As long as we keep playing the poor me card the democrats have been playing the last 60 years , we will not be able to dig out of the situation they put the black communities in to begin with

      Delete
    3. So typical Jersey blame it on more money. You are basically saying we need more police to control certain people.

      Delete
    4. Democrats base their entire political
philosophy on the notion that extorting money from people who are well off, and dumping it into the laps of people who don't ever seem to have enough will magically produce "equality" and thus solve all social problems.

That's an oversimplification, but basically true.

Two things Democrats never seem to take into account are these:

      1. Before it could so them any good, you first have to teach people the VALUE of money, ––how to CONSERVE it, –– how to MAKE it, –– how to INVEST it, –– and how to SPEND it WISELY.

      2. Filtering the funds extorted from "the rich" by the government through a largely self-serving, grossly inefficient, ever-burgeoning bureaucracy results in the LOSS of a very large percentage of the money stolen by the Commie Kleptocrats.

      Delete
    5. "In general the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one class of citizens to give to the other."

      ~ Voltaire (1694-1778)

These truths have been known for thousands of years, but we never seem to learn from them, do we?

    6. Look, the police cost money. They don't work for free. Getting them out of their cars, issuing lucrative traffic tickets all day, means less revenue. For the most part, police are local entities that are funded by property taxes, like the schools. With the mortgage meltdown, property tax revenues went way down, and the ability of local governments to fund their police departments, and schools, was reduced.

This isn't about ideology, or Democrats and Republicans. This is about police and funding them.

    7. And FT, my wife was an inner-city high school teacher for four years back in the 2000's. Far from degenerated, these kids had less crime, less social ills overall, and did better in schools than their parents.

You have a terribly cynical and incorrect understanding of the inner-city poor in America today. Things did get much worse in the 70's and 80's, but by the late-90's things were much improved.

      JMJ

      Delete
    8. Well, Jersey, they used ti say, "All I know is what I .read in the papers." Today it's, "All I know is what I see on TV news."

Ion that isn't proof that things have gotten worse, I can't imagine what .would be? ;-)

I'm glad your wife had a positive experience working in the ghetto. I did too, as I amply described above.

But neither of us are living or working there now, are we?

If inner city culture is so great, why wouldn't we have stayed and made our lives among the poor and disadvantaged so we could continue enjoying the beautiful, intellectually stimulating and spiritually nourishing lifestyle there?

      Delete
    9. We were fine. We moved because we had to take care of family. In almost every way we were better off then, but then came the recession, and well, that's all history. Down here, she found herself working in a very poor rural public school, and those kids were far worse off than their urban counter-parts.

It's not that inner-city culture is so great, or that there is even a discernible culture that could be attached to it in general. Different cities are different. Even the betterment of the peoples has been irregular. Chicago is a mess right now, while many other major cities are doing much better, meanwhile it continues to be that no one wants to move to East St Louis. In a country of 315 million people, it's hard to attach anything to any large, dispersed segment of the population.

Note these incidents predict his behavior and we ignored this... And whenever the subject of "Dreams of My Father" comes up, obama fans get squirrelly. Could it be because they too have read that book?

President Obama should be ashamed of turning the memorial service of five assassinated police officers into an ugly lecture on race, bigotry, Jim Crow, gun control, poverty, bad schools and how police officers treat black folks. He also went out of his way to defend Black Lives Matter. He assured us they are a "peaceful" movement. Mr. President: today was about the five police officers. It was not about Baton Rouge. It was not about Minnesota. It was about uniting. Yet once again, you have divided us. Shame on you, sir. Shame.

    Police Chief David Brown

Dallas police chief David Brown. A thirty year veteran of the Dallas police department. A man who worked his way up from the bottom. A black man who grew up in Texas. A man whose son was killed by the police, after his son (with mental problems) killed a police officer. Here are a few words from chief Brown on guns and protesters:

"It’s challenging when people have AR-15’s slung over and shootings occur and crime and they begin running, and we don’t know if they’re going to shoot or not. It’s been the presumption that a good guy with a gun is the best way to resolve some of these things. Well, we don’t know who the good guy is or the bad guy is if everybody starts shooting."

"I'm the kind of person that I probably wouldn't protest or complain," he said. "I get involved and do something about it by becoming part of the solution."

"Get off that protest line and put an application in, and we'll put you in your neighborhood and we will help you resolve some of the problems you're protesting about."

  38. I felt a Funeral, in my Brain,
    And Mourners to and fro
Kept treading –– treading –– till it seemed
That Sense was breaking through -

And when they all were seated,
    A Service, like a Drum ––
Kept beating –– beating –– till I thought
    My mind was going numb––

And then I heard them lift a Box
    And creak across my Soul
With those same Boots of Lead, again,
Then Space –– began to toll,

As all the Heavens were a Bell,
    And Being, but an Ear,
And I, and Silence, some strange Race,
    Wrecked, solitary, here ––

And then a Plank in Reason, broke,
And I dropped down, and down ––
And hit a World, at every plunge,
And Finished knowing –– then ––

    ~ Emily Dickinson (1830-1886)

She must have been thinking about the stupid, deadly destructive way too many people relate to each other today.

"And then a plank in Reason broke"... and that is exactly what has happened to us –– as it has to many people many times over millennia.

    Said his wifey dear
Now that they've done so much harm
Congress won't want to go back to the farm
    Mister Reuben started winking
___ and slowly rubbed his chin
He pulled his chair up close to mother
And he asked her with a grin

    CHORUS:

How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm
    After they've seen DC?
How ya gonna keep 'em away from Broadway
Jazzin around and paintin' the town
How ya gonna keep 'em away from harm,
    ___ that's a mystery
They'll never want to see a rake or plow
And who has romance with a cow?
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm
    After they've seen DC?

    Rueben, I hope you're mistaken,
    Said his wifey dear
Once a farmer, always a jay
And farmers always stick to the hay
    Mother Reuben, I'm not fakin
Tho you may think it strange
But wine and women play the mischief
When making loose with other folk's change.

    CHORUS:

How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm
    After they've seen DC'
How ya gonna keep 'em away from Broadway
Jazzin around and paintin' the town
How ya gonna keep 'em away from harm,
    ___ that's a mystery
Imagine Reuben when he meets his Pa
He'll pinch his cheek and holler "OOH-LA-LA!
How ya gonna keep 'em down on the farm
    After they've seen DC?

  50. The Righties have lost every shred of patriotism that they MAY of had before. Their hysterical mania to tear down Obama no matter what he says about snything has overwhelmed every other consideration. They don't seem to care that he is trying to put out the flames that exists on Racism . They don't care that presenting the country as divided gives aid and comfort to ISIS/Islamic State. They don't care that he has brought the country back from the brink of bankrouptism. And that he has created millions of jobs, and put Americsns back to work again. And that he has brought the Stock Market to NEW record highs. They'd rather relish in massive American casualties, or any other disasters so long as they could turn it against the President.
This once again shows the righties do not want to see the country successfully recovered, but feather see it failed so that they could regain power .
    Ain't gonna happen.

  60. It was amazing to watch Mr. Comey say that Mrs. Clinton did do what her critics said she did, but there will be no charges. Mr. Comey confirmed Mrs, Clinton did wrong and in another case would face discipline actions, but, he said, that's not what this investigation was about.
If this went to a grand jury, would there be no charges?
Mr. Comey also confirmed that hostile actors could get access to her server and emails. That is dangerous, especially since she was the Secretary of State for the United States.
This will not help Mrs. Clinton's negative ratings, which are driven by a lack of trust.
Prosecutors make these kind of decisions everyday and guilty people do go free. Elected officials should be held to a higher standard, especially officials as high up as Mrs. Clinton.
The public perception will be that Mrs. Clinton did nothing wrong, which Mr. Comey himself said was not true, she did, but perception is everything. I get tired of people doing whatever they want, legal, or not, and just saying, I'm sorry. That's letting them off to easy, and to many elected officials seem to be saying, I'm sorry, to often.
If Mrs. Clinton becomes president I expect some scandal. Her tendencies to bend the law is part of her working character.
Respect for the law just took another hit.

He wrote, “Just kill all white cracker cops LLH” (laughing like hell), under a post showing a video of Alton Sterling’s teenage son speaking about his father’s death.

  62. I get very tired of hearing constant claims that Obama doesn’t support law enforcement from people who never actually listen to word he says. The line of crap-for-the-feeble-minded Sean Hannity has been pitching today notwithstanding, Obama’s message has been clear and consistent all along. He said this on October 27, 2015, speaking before the International Association of Chiefs of Police:

“Too often, law enforcement gets scapegoated for the broader failures of our society and criminal justice system,” Obama told police chiefs from around the US and the world. “I know that you do your jobs with distinction no matter the challenges you face. That’s part of wearing the badge.”

“I reject any narrative that seeks to divide police and communities they serve — that frames any discussion of public safety around ‘us’ and ‘them,’” Obama said. “A narrative that too often gets served up to us by cable news seeking ratings, tweets seeking retweets, or political candidates seeking some attention.”

Believe it or not, he can also understand the concerns of Black Lives Matter. Concerns about the inappropriate use of lethal force by the police are also entirely legitimate. The idea that this has been happening too often is not the product of somebody’s imagination. Such things actually happen. Consider what recently happened to Philando Castile. This is also part of the problem.

Obama, today, on the Baton Rouge shooting:

“I condemn, in the strongest sense of the word, the attack on law enforcement in Baton Rouge. For the second time in two weeks, police officers who put their lives on the line for ours every day were doing their job when they were killed in a cowardly and reprehensible assault. These are attacks on public servants, on the rule of law, and on civilized society, and they have to stop.

“We may not yet know the motives for this attack, but I want to be clear: there is no justification for violence against law enforcement. None. These attacks are the work of cowards who speak for no one. They right no wrongs. They advance no causes. The officers in Baton Rouge; the officers in Dallas – they were our fellow Americans, part of our community, part of our country, with people who loved and needed them, and who need us now – all of us – to be at our best.

    Is that not clear enough?
